Oriental manuscripts in India: a literature survey

    Get PDF
The purpose of this paper is to review the literature about oriental manuscript collections in India and provide an overview of the area. Design/methodology/approach – A core set of literature on oriental manuscript collections in India was retrieved after doing a thorough literature search in different databases. Literature on various aspects of this topic was reviewed. The paper is organized based on various themes to make the study fruitful for various sections of society. Findings – Oriental manuscripts are present in different research libraries, university libraries and public libraries in India but university libraries are leading others in preserving these manuscripts, with few exceptions. Manuscripts are available in different oriental languages but mostly in Sanskrit. Every religious sect in India has contributed immensely in collecting and preserving these manuscripts. The contribution of famous kings of Indian history is also enormous in this regard. Research limitations/implications – The review does not claim to be exhaustive, as most sources might have been skipped during the study for their non-availability. Originality/value – This paper provides a concise overview of manuscripts present in different Indian libraries and research institution/universities and provides a valuable entry point to the field of Indian manuscripts for research scholars, information scientists and other interested parties. Keywords India, University libraries, Research libraries, Archives, Collections management, History, Oriental manuscripts, Manuscripts, Oriental manuscripts-India, Oriental libraries, Oriental libraries-Indi

The Impact of Open Access Contributions: Developed and Developing World Perspectives

    Get PDF
The study explores the research impact of ‘Open Access research articles’ across the globe with a view to test the hypothesis that “OA research contributions emanating from developing countries receive equal citations (subsequently resultant research impact) as those from the developed world”. The study covers 5639 research articles from 50 Open Access DOAJ based Medical Sciences journals covering the period from 2005 to 2006. The research impact of OA research publications measured by the citation counts varies from journal to journal and from country to country. Statistically significant difference is noted between the research impact of the developed and the developing world for OA research articles. The research articles from the developed countries receive higher number of citations (subsequently resultant research impact) compared to those of the developing world. The study may help and pave way for framing policies and strategies to increase the impact of research in the developing world

Information Needs of Physicians and Surgeons of Jammu & Kashmir

    Get PDF
The paper attempts to explore the information needs of physicians and surgeons of Jammu & Kashmir Design/Methodology/Approach: The survey is conducted among physicians and surgeons working at primary, secondary and tertiary health care institutions by administrating a questionnaire employing stratified random sampling. Findings: The information needs of the physicians and surgeons vary with practice location, affiliation and specialization. Most of the physicians and surgeons need patient data/patient care information, latest medical knowledge, information about new drugs and medical products/equipments. Originality/Value: The identification of information needs of physicians and surgeons is a maiden attempt for the state of J & K. This study may encourage and foster further research for effectiveness and better performance of medical libraries and information managers in the State

Impact Of Open Access Research Contributions Across Select Disciplines

    Get PDF
The study is based on 4,413 papers identified from Elsevier's Scopus for various fields from 2000 to 2004 to assess the research impact of OA journal articles, from DOAJ based journals, using sampling techniques following 'R' software. It focuses to test the hypothesis "OA articles in hard, urban and convergent fields receive more citations (hence higher research impact) than those in soft, rural and divergent subjects, besides a comparative study of research impact across disciplines, supported with experimental method and literature review

Environmental concerns in the knowledge industry: literature review

    Get PDF
The paper aims to explore and identify the recent contributions to the literature available about various environmental issues associated with the Knowledge Industry, from conception until dissemination of knowledge to end-users from the sources available. Design/methodology/approach – An extensive literature survey was performed in an attempt to identify substantial works published to date concerning environmental issues coupled with the Knowledge Industry. A range of online scholarly databases, search engines and websites of recognized international as well as national organizations and publishers was searched, to spot out the substantial works carried out in the area. Varied search terms such as “environmental issues of paper industry”, “paper consumption for books”, “books and carbon footprint” “environmental issues in pulp and paper industry”, “computers and carbon footprint”, “publishing industry and environment”, “internet and environmental issues” and “green computing”, etc. were used for retrieving the literature. Findings – The literature review connotes that hardly any systematic study or scholarly output which can facilitate the precise and accurate facts about environmental issues coupled with the Knowledge Industry is available, although the size of the industry and its effect on the environment is quite large. Practical implications – It is evident from the scrutiny of literature existing that there are still areas for advanced exploration on the topic of environmental concerns of the Knowledge industry; and study paves the way for the concerned organizations and institutions (such as Libraries and Publishers), at global level, to take substantial measures to overcome hazardous effects from the industry. Originality/value – The paper is the first ordered and thorough attempt to review the literature and provide a summary of adverse effects of the Knowledge Industry on the environment
